APPLE
TREE SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE
As a community progress team,
Silverton Together works collaboratively with all sectors of the community to
address needs and find solutions to problems that affect children and families.
One such need is school supplies.
There are an estimated 1,400 children in the Silver Falls and Mt. Angel school
districts who may find it difficult to afford the supplies they need to do well
in school.

When is the drive?
The students are preparing the
"trees" July 10th through 28th. Participating businesses, churches, and
organizations can start displaying and encouraging folks to "pick apples" from
August 1st through 25th.
How does it work?
Students from 4th through 11th
grades work tirelessly throughout the summer, starting out as team members
assisting in various aspects of the drive. The next year, they are assigned
increased responsibility, according to their interests. The third year, they may
serve as a chair for the event. They will then serve as a mentor on their fourth
year, giving guidance to the new chair and team members.
Students work on constructing "Apple
Trees" and boxes, contacting businesses, giving presentations and preparing
press releases, creating systems and organizing products, recording and
processing data, writing letters, taking inventory and allocating resources.
Students have made all the "apples"
containing various supplies that are needed. Folks can "pick" the apples of
their choice. Some apples have one type of school supply, some ask for the
complete set of supplies for one child, and others ask for a financial donation
to purchase supplies most needed.
If you choose to purchase supplies,
you can drop them of at participating sites, or at Hi-School Pharmacy, Rite-Aid
Drugstore, or Silverton Together.
If you select apples requesting a
financial donation, you can return your gift in the attached envelope addressed
to Silverton Together. The financial donations will be used near the end of the
drive to purchase supplies that are still needed.
How do the children get the
supplies?
All the supplies will be given to
the schools to distribute to the classrooms. The teachers will give the supplies
to the children in need. There's no standing in line for parents, and the kids
will discretely receive the supplies they need. |
