Opportunities for Young Families
Boot Camp for Dads-to-Be - A two-hour workshop run by men who bring in their own infants to help orient fathers-to-be on the realities of parenthood. Includes hands-on experience with diaper changing, etc. (Free pedicure and massage for mom in a separate room!) Offered once every other month. Fee: $15.00/family.
Parents/Infants Plus (PIP) - A parent education and peer support network offered to all new families during the critical first year of an infant's life. Ten sessions, meeting every other
week, Silverton Hospital Birth Center. New groups begin every 2-3 months. Program fee: $35.00/family.
Wonderful Ones - A series of ten weekly classes for parents of one-year-olds, focusing on helping parents provide balance between the child's need for exploration and appropriate boundaries. Offered twice a year. Program fee: $35.00/family.
Terrific Twos - A series of ten weekly classes for parents of children
age 21 months to 3 years, an age when concerns about setting limits, discipline and tantrums can fog the clearest mind. Offered twice a year. Program fee: $35.00/family.
Young Parents Program - Offers parenting tips, life skills (budgeting, cooking, etc.), info on local resources, and a tremendous support network for parents up to 21 years of age. Meets Tuesday
evenings September through May. Free.
Indoor Park - A place for children age 0-4 to run and play even on rainy days and a place for parents to meet and share. Open Monday through Thursday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. throughout the school year. Cost: $35.00/5-month session (Sept.-Jan. or Jan.-May) plus co-op duties. Location: Silverton United Methodist Church.
Opportunities for Families
Make Parenting A Pleasure - An intensive twelve- session course for parents with children age
0-8, especially good for those with many stressors in their lives who are
interested in changing their family dynamics. Fee: $15.00/family.
Parenting with Love and Logic - A seven-session course for all parents, especially of children age
4-14, who want practical techniques for less stressful, more effective parenting and more ease in family life. Offered twice a year. Fee: $30/person or $40/couple.
Families Talking about Changes - A two-session workshop for girls in fourth through sixth grade and their parents. Offers a safe environment in which to discuss the changes coming with puberty and sets in place a foundation for communicating about sensitive subjects. Offered once a year. Fee: $10.00.
Families in Action (ATTENTION, PARENTS OF TEENS!) - A six-session
family education class, Including a
component for parents of teens and pre-teens, a component for youth age 12-17,
and childcare for younger siblings. Designed to help parents and teens improve
their relationships and learn how to deal with the pressures facing youth today,
including dating, rumors, alcohol and drugs.Offered once or twice a year. Fee: $35/family
Strengthening the Family - TAUGHT IN SPANISH - A ten-session course for Spanish-speaking parents that addresses the unique challenges of minority and/or immigrant families. Includes fun activities and group-building games. Free transportation available in Silverton area. Offered once a year. No cost.
Second Time Around - A series of workshops for grandparents and other
relatives raising children. Topics include: It Wasn't Supposed To Be Like This,
Rebuilding a Family, Discipline is Not a Dirty Word, Protecting and Planning for
Your Child's Future.
Scholarships available for all programs. Free child care
